A COMMERCIAL CASE STUDY
Solar PV system helping a family-run timber merchant reduce energy costs
After successfully installing EV chargers at its Coventry headquarters, Bates Timber Merchants returned to Stratford Energy Solutions to deliver the next phase of its sustainability strategy.
The family-run business wanted to reduce electricity costs, lower its carbon footprint and make better use of its large commercial roof. Stratford Energy designed and installed a 103kWp rooftop solar PV system, enabling the site to generate renewable electricity on-site while supporting the company’s long-term environmental and financial goals.
Project at a glance
| Location | Coventry |
| Client | Bates Timber Merchants Ltd |
| Industry | Timber & Building Supplies |
| System Size | 103kWp |
| Installation Type | Commercial rooftop solar PV |
| Previous Project | Workplace EV charging installation |
| Primary Objectives | Lower energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, improve sustainability |
The challenge
As energy prices continued to rise, Bates Timber wanted to build on its earlier investment in EV charging by generating more of its own electricity.
The business was looking for a solution that would:
- Reduce dependence on grid electricity
- Lower long-term operating costs
- Improve environmental performance
- Make productive use of available roof space
- Support future business growth with renewable energy infrastructure
Having previously worked with Stratford Energy, the client wanted a trusted partner capable of delivering another successful commercial energy project.
Our solution
Following a detailed site survey, Stratford Energy designed a bespoke 103kWp commercial solar PV system tailored to the site’s electricity demand and roof layout.
The installation was carefully planned to minimise disruption to daily operations while maximising long-term energy generation and return on investment.
Combined with the existing EV charging infrastructure, the project forms part of a wider renewable energy strategy that helps Bates Timber reduce both operating costs and carbon emissions.
Results
Lower electricity costs
Generating renewable electricity on-site helps offset a significant proportion of daytime electricity consumption, reducing exposure to rising energy prices.
Continued sustainability investment
The solar installation builds on Bates Timber’s earlier EV charging project, creating a more comprehensive renewable energy solution for the business.
Greater energy resilience
Producing electricity on-site reduces reliance on imported power while helping the business manage future energy costs with greater confidence.
Trusted partnership
Perhaps the strongest endorsement is that Bates Timber returned to Stratford Energy for a second project. Repeat business demonstrates confidence in both the installation quality and the ongoing support provided throughout the customer journey.
Why this project matters
This project demonstrates how commercial renewable energy doesn’t need to happen all at once.
By first investing in workplace EV charging and then expanding into solar PV, Bates Timber has taken a phased approach to decarbonising its operations. Each investment builds on the previous one, creating a more efficient and future-ready business while spreading capital expenditure over time.
For many commercial organisations, this staged approach can be an effective way to improve sustainability without disrupting day-to-day operations.
