Solar PV and battery storage helping a leading removals company reduce energy costs

Simon Hall Ltd, one of Worcestershire’s leading removals, storage and shipping companies, wanted to reduce rising electricity costs while making its business more resilient and sustainable.

Stratford Energy Solutions designed and installed a 50.4kWp commercial solar PV system, integrated with battery storage, enabling the business to generate renewable electricity on-site and store surplus energy for use when demand is highest.

Since commissioning, the system has generated more than 309MWh of clean electricity, helping Simon Hall Ltd reduce operating costs, improve energy independence and avoid almost 60 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

The challenge

With increasing energy costs and growing sustainability commitments, Simon Hall Ltd wanted to invest in infrastructure that would deliver long-term value.

The business needed a solution that would:

  • Reduce reliance on grid electricity

To maximise the value of the solar installation, the client also wanted to store excess electricity generated during the day for use during periods of higher demand.

Our solution

Following a detailed site assessment, Stratford Energy designed and installed a bespoke commercial renewable energy system comprising:

  • 144 SunPower Maxeon 2 solar panels
  • 50.4kWp rooftop solar PV system
  • Tesla Powerwall 2 battery storage
  • Full system design, installation and commissioning

Delivered between April 2019 and January 2020, the project was carefully planned to minimise disruption while ensuring the business could continue operating throughout the installation.

By integrating battery storage with solar PV, the system captures surplus electricity that would otherwise be exported, allowing Simon Hall Ltd to maximise self-consumption and reduce imported energy.

Results

Over 309MWh of renewable electricity generated

Since becoming operational, the system has produced more than 309.61MWh of clean electricity, significantly reducing the company’s dependence on purchased grid energy.

Lower operating costs

Generating and storing electricity on-site helps Simon Hall Ltd offset a substantial proportion of its energy consumption, improving long-term cost certainty and reducing exposure to energy price volatility.

Greater energy resilience

Battery storage enables excess solar generation to be used when it’s needed most, improving self-consumption and making better use of every unit of renewable electricity generated.

Reduced carbon emissions

The installation has already prevented 59,888kg of CO₂ emissions (equivalent to planting approximately 3,623 trees) supporting the company’s sustainability ambitions.

Strong financial return

With an estimated eight-year payback period, the system is expected to deliver decades of low-cost renewable electricity beyond the initial investment.
