How does the Tesla Powerwall 2 work?
The Tesla Powerwall 2 is a rechargeable home battery that stores electricity for later use. It charges from your solar panels during the day, then powers your home in the evening when the panels stop generating. It can also charge from the grid itself. If you’re on a time-of-use tariff, the Powerwall fills up with cheap off-peak electricity overnight and runs your home through the expensive peak hours. That works even if you don’t have solar panels yet.
The Powerwall 2 has a built-in inverter, so it’s an AC-coupled unit that fits alongside an existing solar system or works on its own. Inside, it uses lithium-ion battery cells. Each unit stores 13.5 kWh of usable energy and delivers 5 kW of continuous power, with 7 kW available in short bursts.
What is the Tesla Gateway and what backup do you get?
Every Powerwall 2 system includes the Tesla Backup Gateway. The Gateway manages the flow of energy between your panels, the battery, your home and the grid, and it enables the monitoring you see in the Tesla app. It also detects a power cut and switches your home over to battery power automatically.
There are two ways to set up that backup:
- Whole-home backup keeps your entire home running during an outage, if your usage stays within the Powerwall’s power limit.
- Partial-home backup protects a chosen set of essential circuits, such as your lights, fridge, router and boiler. This is often the more practical choice for larger homes.
The Powerwall 2 is also efficient. It has a round-trip efficiency of around 90%, which means roughly 90% of the energy you put in comes back out for you to use.

A quick note on the warranty: Tesla’s 10-year cover assumes the Powerwall stays connected to the internet so it can receive firmware updates. Keep it online and you keep the full term. Tesla Powerwall 2 vs Powerwall 3: what’s the difference?
The main difference is power output. The Powerwall 3 delivers up to around 11 kW of continuous power against the Powerwall 2’s 5 kW, and it has a built-in solar inverter, so it connects directly to your panels. Both store the same 13.5 kWh of energy, so they run your home for a similar length of time; the Powerwall 3 can simply handle heavier loads at once, such as an electric shower or an EV charger. For a new solar-and-battery system today, most homes are better suited to the Tesla Powerwall 3, since its integrated inverter simplifies the install and its higher power output covers whole-home backup more comfortably. The Powerwall 2 remains a strong choice as a retrofit where you already have a working solar inverter.
Grants and incentives for the Powerwall 2 in the UK
Two schemes make home battery storage cheaper to buy and run in 2026: 0% VAT and the Smart Export Guarantee.
0% VAT. Battery storage installed for a UK home qualifies for 0% VAT, whether you fit it alongside new solar panels or add it on its own — standalone batteries have been covered since 1 February 2024. On a £7,500 system that’s a saving of well over £1,000 compared with the standard rate. The relief is set to run until 31 March 2027, after which it is expected to rise to 5%, so an install before that date locks the saving in. You don’t apply for anything; your installer puts the 0% rate on the quote. The detail sits in HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). The SEG pays you for surplus solar electricity you send back to the grid. It runs under Ofgem’s SEG rules, which require every supplier with 150,000 or more domestic customers to offer at least one export tariff. Rates vary a lot between suppliers, so it pays to shop around — our guide to SEG tariffs walks through the current market. To claim SEG payments you need an MCS-certified installation and a smart meter, both of which we handle as standard.
A battery changes the SEG maths in your favour. Instead of exporting cheap and buying back expensive, you store your own energy and use it yourself, then export only what’s left over.
Is the Tesla Powerwall 2 still available? Buying new vs used
Tesla wound down Powerwall 2 production in late 2025, so brand-new units are now limited to remaining installer stock while the Powerwall 3 takes over as Tesla’s current home battery. At Stratford Energy we now fit the Powerwall 3 as standard for new battery installations, and can advise on a Powerwall 2 where it suits a retrofit and stock allows. If you want to buy a Powerwall 2 today, you’ll usually be looking at either that end-of-line stock or the second-hand market.
You’ll also see the Powerwall 2 listed for sale used or second-hand. It’s worth understanding the trade-offs before you go that way:
- Warranty. Tesla’s 10-year warranty depends on correct registration and an internet connection. A used unit may have limited warranty left, or none, and cover doesn’t always transfer cleanly to a new owner.
- Certified installation. A Powerwall must be fitted by a qualified installer to meet UK electrical standards and to keep your MCS certification, which you need for SEG payments. A cheap used battery with a non-compliant install can cost more in the long run.
- Safety and condition. With a used lithium battery you can’t easily see how it has been cycled or stored. A certified, professionally commissioned unit gives you a known starting point.
For most homeowners, a new, certified installation, whether that’s a remaining Powerwall 2 or a current Powerwall 3, is the safer and more cost-effective choice once warranty, SEG eligibility and peace of mind are factored in.

Is the Tesla Powerwall 2 worth it for UK homes?
A Powerwall 2 is worth it if you have solar panels, or plan to, and use a good share of your electricity in the evening. It lets you use the energy you’ve already generated instead of buying it back from the grid at peak rates, and it gives you backup power when the lights go out.
Here’s the saving in simple terms. Say your peak electricity costs around 26p per unit and you can store energy either from your own panels or from cheap overnight power at roughly 7 to 13p per unit. Every unit you shift out of peak and into stored energy is money kept in your pocket. Store and use a few units a day and it adds up across the year. As a guide, a typical 4-bedroom Midlands home on the right setup saves around £600–£900 a year, with most customers reaching payback in 5–7 years. These figures are indicative and depend on your usage, your tariff and the system you choose.
